You're a Southport supporter?!

Post by bnek »

Bumped into a fellow Sandgrounder, identifiable by his pin badges at the self service checkouts at Tesco in Hindley yesterday.

So Portchatters, when have you randomly bumped into a fellow supporter?

I once randomly bumped into another Southport fan in the corridor of a busy Manchester hospital.

I was in Sainsburys local in the centre of Bath, wearing my Port scarf, last winter, when a guy said "you don't get many sandgrounders in here". I replied with and you ?,...
Another exile down here. I still wonder if he was " wiltshire Dave".
I am trying conversion therapy on 2 friends, (Spurs & West ham fans), who will be traveling with me to the Gloucester game. We have an agreement, if Port win they buy my beer, if we lose i buy their beer... A good result and i may even get them to go to Hereford !.... I like free beer.
A friend in Trowbridge always checks Ports results (there isn't much to do in Trowbridge). So there are a few in the BBath area.

In my teens I was interviewed for a job at Argos, the interviewer turned out to be a port fan. We regaled each other with memories of the Notts County FA Cup game, I thought I must have this in the bag... didn't get the job

Two quick stories.

- Southport fan in Verdi's in Mumbles, Swansea a few years back. Had a good chat about the glory years of Brian Kettle.
- Not a Southport fan but...moved house two years back...nextdoor neighbour is a Cheltenham fan who was at the Trophy final in 1998. Always tell him they got lucky in that game as we battered them for the most part.

Just leaving the WACCA in Perth after watching the first day of the test match several years ago and wearing my Southport supporters shirt I was approached by a young lady who came from Southport and had emigrated with her parents in her very early teens. Her dad had been a keen supporter and she said she and he still followed their results and she hoped one day to pay a return visit including to Haig Ave,

One of the officers on the QE2 recognised my footy shirt and rattled off 3 or 4 names from yesteryear, Eric Redrobe amongst them.

Another town that had a Conference level football club long before we did. But some would have us believe that clubs only pass us on the way up.

Aylesbury too. Nice article on BBC Football today about when they played England in a Euro 88 warm up. Perhaps we don’t have it all that bad!

Didn't we beat Bulgaria at HA in 1966?
