Liam Watson update

Post by loyal jay »

From Twitter, Stephen Killen, ‘Southport manager Liam Watson has joined the Steven Gerrard academy to provide expertise off and on the pitch.

They boast the likes of Tranmere Rovers striker Elliott Nevitt as graduates’.

It’s unclear whether this is full time to me

The Academy itself tweeted
“ We would like to welcome the highly experienced Liam Watson to Steven Gerrard Academy 🤝
The extremely respected current Southport manager and former professional footballer will be sharing his expertise with our students and support them both in the classroom and on the pitch”

This should be seen as a positive. Greater exposure to emerging talent which we can hopefully tie down and progress up the pyramid. Maybe a bit of a safety net for Liam if things continue to spiral…

We don't realise how lucky we are to have such a highly regarded manager. 👍👏

Hasn't he got some family connection to the Gerrard family? Sounds like he is looking after number 1.....

Highly regarded manager?

Where is the success?

We are a struggling side in the 6th tier of English football!

Ian Kyle does not have the balls to sack him and Watson will not sack himself-it is all too cosy and friendly!

Meanwhile the results and supporters suffer.

I was a lifelong supporter (50+ years) but refuse to go as long as high ball Watson is in charge. I got fed up getting a stiff neck through having to follow the ball in the sky. Boring football with no other ideas. When he’s gone a lot of absent supporters will return.

So why do supporters still turn up to matches?? If people are so fed up with the football on show (myself included btw) then just vote with your feet and dont turn up until things change. Simple really

Surely there is a conflict of interest here? Wouldn’t the SG academy be in competition with Southport’s own academy for the recruitment of players/students?

Or has our academy been dropped?

Is liam a full time SFC employee? If so then surely its not concentrating on the job in hand. If not then I suppose he has to balance his personal books somehow..

Maybe this will mean Terry McPhillips taking a more influential role - which may not be a bad thing.

The Academy has a number of coaches/mentors/programme leaders who are managers of football clubs in the pyramid. Similar to Robbie Fowler’s academy.

The academy itself welcomes players from around the world and offers them a pathway in coaching and/or playing.

In terms of distracting the manager or taking him away from the role - it’s unlikely.

We are the nutters, we come from the sea.
We must be nutters to watch SFC.
